Reduce Your Plastic & Save Money

Plastic Bags

Blue Avocado is a company that manufactures leakproof reusable bags. Essentially reusable Ziplock bags. I’ve been using them for years & they’ve never failed me. They’re easy to clean & will eventually save you money as you don’t have to keep buying Ziplocks. Outside of that, it also helps the environment by reducing waste. They have a couple different kinds but my favorite is the (re)zip Stand-Up Bags.

Shopping Bags

Reusable shopping bags are one of easiest ways to reduce your waste. People are constantly giving out free ones or you can spend a few bucks to buy some. I like these Reusable Grocery Bags because they can fold into a little pouch that is easy to carry anywhere.

Produce Bags

I’ve stopped using produce bags altogether. There’s really no point in putting your produce in a plastic bag. You have to wash the food regardless, so placing it in a plastic bag is just wasteful. If I want to use a bag, I use purifyou reusable produce bags in place of the plastic ones.

Straws

Everything tastes better when you drink from a straw. I was never one to buy plastic straws, but I’m obsessed with ICOSA Living glass straws. I use them daily & every time a friend uses them they get hooked too.

Plastic Wrap

Bees Wrap is a washable, reusable, and compostable alternative to plastic wrap. It works just as well as plastic wrap, helps the environment, & will eventually save you money.

Food Products

Attempt to buy products with less packaging i.e. buy in bulk. Avoid products with single servings – they cost more & produce more waste; you can always portion the food yourself at home. If you have access to places that let you refill your own containers use them. It’ll save you money & reduce waste.

Take-Out Boxes

Bring a small tupperware with you to restaurants if you think you’ll have leftovers. I just stash one in my purse when going to a restaurant where I know I will be taking some food home. If your willing to spend the money I love Pyrex and Rubbermaid Brilliance. The Rubbermaid ones are cheaper but the container still stays crystal clear.

Bottles

Buying bottles of water is expensive & a waste of plastic. I carry a water bottle with me essentially 24/7. My favorite bottle is the Hydroflask. It’ll keep your water ice cold all day & save you from spending money on individual bottles.

Trash Bags

I’ve just started attempting to compost. For products I can’t recycle or compost, I use Hefty Renew bags. Try to find bags with the highest amount of recycled plastic to reduce your environmental impact.
